Downtime after Hair Transplant Explained by Dr. Vikas Gupta

Every surgery requires some downtime. If you are considering hair transplant surgery, it’s not going to be any different. It will take some time before you can look your normal self again. You will have to wait until the time you look presentable enough to face the world. It’s nothing to worry about as it is just a short phase in a long journey.

    Its short term and temporary

It is one of the most popular deterrents for the procedure to be undertaken. Most people feel bad that they have gone through so much just to wait a bit longer! But dear friends, we have to look at the larger picture. Indeed it’s a process aimed at improving your appearance and it seems so frustrating to wait a few days more to let the world see the new ‘you’. But have you forgotten that it is, after all, a surgical procedure and it needs some healing time?

Another reason is it will help you in keeping your little secret under wraps. If you venture out too soon, people will most probably know that you had a hair transplant.

    How long is the downtime?

There is no one-size-fits all type of downtime. Each procedure is as individual as the degree of baldness, the duration of the session and the skin tone of the patient. While some people heal as soon as ten days, some people take much longer. Fair-skinned people might experience redness around the operated area. One must keep in mind that the doctor will have to shave the recipient area for getting clarity and precision. The growth in such area will be starting almost from a scratch. Roughly speaking, a minimum of two weeks will be required for a patient’s downtime. It could last more for some people (four to five weeks). It depends on the degree of the strip sessions. If you can wear a hat to work, you will be able to decrease your downtime. If wearing a hat is not an option, it will require at least five weeks of absence.

    Prepare Ahead

If you have short hair, get a buzz cut done before the transplant. For those who have longer hair, it will be better to wear your hair in such a way that it covers the transplant site. This way, after the surgery, no one will feel the change in your hairstyle. It is a wonderful tip for people who opt for FUE. You will need a minimum of 2 weeks of downtime for FUE and 4 weeks for strip sessions which involve a larger area.
