Can I Get Hair Transplant if I Am Bald?

Balding was associated with advancing age just a few years ago but since then the trend had changed. This is due to the fact that more and more people have started showing balding at a young age. The causative factors may be wide and varied but the truth is that the age at which baldness starts has decreased greatly. Time and again we come across people who are still young but are dealing with the problem of hair loss. Of course, the problem has many viable medical and cosmetic solutions. Usually, people opt for cosmetic treatments as soon as they start noticing hair loss. This contains gels, oils, and shampoos which claim to restore and rejuvenate your hair. If these don’t work, the medical treatment is availed. These may contain taking medicines readily available at the pharmacist. Even if they fail to show results, the last option which is left is the hair transplant. People opt for hair transplant surgery when they have lost hope of getting their hair back with all other methods.

How Does Hair Transplant Work?

Hair transplant is a process in which the hair is transplanted from the donor area to the recipient area using hair grafts. If the head is not completely bald, the hair grafts are taken from the area abundant in hair. If the head is completely bald, then the hair from other regions of the body might be considered, even though the results are much better when the donor area is on the head. Hair grafts from the chest, or beard may be considered for the transplant. If they are not enough, the pubic area may also be considered.

Complete Baldness And Hair Transplant

While complete baldness may be due to three reasons. One needs to be sure what caused the baldness to answer the question correctly. There are three primary reasons for baldness-

1. Androgenic baldness
2. Alopecia Universalis
3. Alopecia Totalis.

1. Androgenic baldness – In this case, the hair can be transplanted but it will depend on the amount of hair you have on your donor area. The head will be completely bald, so the donor areas will be considered from the beard, chest or pubic area. The more the amount of hair in such areas, the more your   chances of a successful transplant. But if the amount of hair is insufficient here , it is most unlikely that there is any possibility of successful hair transplant.
2. Alopecia Universalis-It is another form of the disease which shows up as complete loss of hair on the head. It is a disease which affects the immune system and leads the body to believe that the hair follicles are actually foreign entities which need to be resisted. A person suffering from this disease tends to show hair loss, the end result being complete baldness. In such a case,  it is not possible to perform hair transplant as the hair follicles are destroyed.
3. Alopecia Universalis-This is another autoimmune disease which attacks not only the hair follicles of the head area but also the follicles all over the body. The symptoms show up in the form of hair loss from the scalp, eyebrows, and all other parts of the body. Even if the hair is transplanted using whatever hair is left on the chest, the chances of graft rejection are too high.

So the chances of your head getting its hair back with transplant depend highly on the reason of your baldness.
